# PH.6 b - Elastic and Inelastic Collisions

The student will** investigate **and **understand** that
quantities including mass, energy, momentum, and charge are conserved. Key
concepts include

b) elastic and inelastic collisions.

### BIG IDEAS

- I can explain why two cars seem to "bounce" backwards after colliding.

### UNDERSTANDING THE STANDARD

The concepts developed in this standard include the following:

- For elastic collisions, total momentum and total
kinetic energy are conserved. For inelastic collisions, total momentum is
conserved and some kinetic energy is transformed to other forms of energy.

### ESSENTIALS

In order to meet this standard, it is expected that students will

b) provide and explain examples showing linear momentum is the product of mass and velocity, and is conserved in a closed system.
